Mt. Kalatungan and Mt. Wiji Adventure

An Epic Climb to Mt. Kalatungan: My 3-Day Adventure

You won't believe the adventure I had at Mt. Kalatungan, let me tell you!

This mountain is a Philippine icon; it's the fifth highest peak in the country, a towering 2,899 meters above sea level. As a lover of mountain climbing challenges, I had my sights set on conquering it.

The Challenge Ahead

So, this mountain is no joke, it's a serious climb with an 8 out of 9 difficulty rating – definitely not for the faint-hearted!

The trail can be steep and muddy, especially when it rains, so it's a real test of your hiking skills and stamina. But, I was ready to take it on!

Adventure Begins at the Bus Terminal

After an exhausting bus journey from my hometown to Maramag, Bukidnon, I arrived at the crack of dawn.

I was keen to meet up with the hike organizers from Davao City as I'd arranged to join their group.

Hiking solo is awesome, but sometimes you crave the company and support of fellow adventurers, especially when tackling these tough climbs.

A Cultural Interlude: Ritual Offering

Before our climb began, we made an unexpected stop at Brgy. Mendis in Pangantucan, Bukidnon. Here, we witnessed a special ceremony performed by the Talaandig tribe - a unique and sacred experience!

Arriving at the village was an adventure in itself, with bumpy and dusty roads leading up to the barangay hall. Little did I know, this would be a meeting of the minds - or adventurers, rather.

When I got there, I was surprised to find not one but three organizers, as well as a huge group of hikers, all originally bound for Mt. Apo, which had suddenly closed. Crazy timing, right?

We had this incredible moment as over 70 of us gathered to witness the tribe's sacred ritual offering, which involved sacrificing chickens, coins, and wine. It was so powerful and really made me appreciate the culture and traditions tied to the land we were about to explore.

Hitting the Trail

With our spirits high, we set off after a filling lunch, even though the weather was looking a bit moody. But hey, that's all part of the fun of hiking!

I made sure my backpack was covered in case of rain, heeding the organizer's advice to start the climb early to snag a good spot at the View Deck, our first rest stop.

The first hour of the trek was like a nature movie with ever-changing views. Unfortunately, the skies opened up and poured heavy rain just as we were getting comfortable.

Thankfully, I had my umbrella and kept going, determined not to let it slow us down. We hiked for about two hours in the rain and reaching the View Deck felt incredible!

The View Deck was like a sanctuary for us tired hikers. It's a two-story rest house, and believe me, we needed it!

Some hikers were already there, but I managed to find a great spot, thanks to our early start. It was getting crowded quickly, so many set up camp around the rest area.

There was this awesome sense of energy and camaraderie among us, despite the cool and foggy conditions. I was having the time of my life!

Muleta Falls

Buko-buko sa Anay and Muleta Falls

So, the second day on the trail was like entering a different realm. We hiked through this amazing mossy forest, and let me tell ya, the scenery was straight out of a fantasy movie!

The trail got real serious with a crazy steep section called "Buko-Buko sa Anay." It was a proper endurance test, and I had to pause every now and then to catch my breath.

The misty atmosphere was enchanting but also a bit of a downer for my non-hiking pants—time to upgrade my gear, I guess! As we made our way through this mystical forest, the scenery became even more surreal.

Just as the sun was rising, we reached Muleta Falls, which was like a magical reward for our efforts. Can you picture a golden sunbeam-lit waterfall? It was like we'd stumbled upon a hidden paradise.

We took a much-needed break here, capturing some epic selfies and enjoying breakfast with a view.

Sun-soaked Struggles

From magical waterfalls to sun-baked trails, we faced it all. The next challenge was a steep slope covered in Cogon grass, and boy, did the sun make its presence known!

Hiking up that incline was like a slow roast. Each step felt heavier as the sun sapped our energy. But we kept our eyes on the prize, knowing the spectacular views and sense of achievement that awaited us at the peak.

The Final Push to the Summit

At the junction, we came across the Sanggaya camp, where some hikers wisely decided to rest. But a few of us were determined to reach the top.

So, we gathered our remaining strength and prepared for the ultimate challenge: the final ascent to Mt. Kalatungan's peak.

When the Going Gets Tough

What we didn't expect was just how demanding the trail to the summit would be. It was almost like the mountain wanted to keep its secrets.

The path was absurdly steep, muddy, and root-filled, making each step a potential hazard. We had to be super cautious and take our time, especially after witnessing a hiker lose their footing and sprain their ankle.
It was a harsh reminder that mountains don't discriminate; even the experienced need to stay alert.

Our new mantra, "slow and steady," guided us through the treacherous mud that clung to our boots like glue. Each step was a small victory, and we could feel the mountain testing our determination.

Nature's Unexpected Summit Surprise

When we finally summited after what felt like ages (but was probably 30-45 minutes), I was in for a shock.

This wasn't your typical mountain summit with panoramic views. Nope, Mt. Kalatungan's peak was a hidden sanctuary of thriving vegetation.

Trees and shrubs of various shapes and sizes created an enchanting ecosystem. I felt like I'd entered a secret garden reserved for those brave enough to climb.

Reaching the summit filled me with this overwhelming sense of accomplishment. I snapped tons of photos, grinning like a kid in a candy shop.

The unique scenery, unlike anything I'd seen before, made the strenuous journey totally worth it. But my stomach was growling, reminding me it was time to head back for some food at the junction.

The Playful Yet Perplexing 'Monkey Trail'

You'd think the adventure might've ended there, but oh no, not even close! Our journey to Bamboo Camp involved tackling the notorious 'monkey trail.'

This downhill path lived up to its reputation as a nasty, trickster trail. Giant roots twisted across the path, and the constant moisture created slick, slippery conditions.

Every step was a careful dance to avoid an accident.

After an intense hour of focus and muscle-burning effort, we finally conquered the monkey trail and stumbled into Bamboo Camp, our temporary home.

We set up camp, proud yet exhausted, ready to rest our aching bodies and share tales of our adventure so far.

A cozy tent tucked away in the lush, moss-covered forest of Mt. Kalatungan.

A Cold Night's Sleep and an Early Start

Okay, now picture this: the sun sets, and the temperature drops like a rock.

Despite my heavy layers and the emergency blanket (I'd learned my lesson on the Mt. Kitanglad climb about the cold), I was still freezing!

I curled up like a penguin, trying to stay warm, but sleep was not on my side. Teeth chattering and body shivering, I tossed and turned all night, waiting for dawn to break.

I swear those minutes turned into hours! At 1 a.m., I gave up and emerged from my tent, likely resembling an icicle-covered snowman.

By 2 a.m., we were ready to tackle Mt. Wiji (aka Mt. Lumpanag). This climb was intense - an almost vertical 45-minute ascent with just our headlamps and faint moonlight to guide us.

My legs were on fire, questioning my life decisions! Sadly, the summit wasn't a glorious sunrise moment as we'd hoped; instead, we walked into a foggy, windy, drizzly scene straight out of a horror movie.

A Waiting Game for the Sunrise

We trekked on, finally reaching our sunrise moment around 7 a.m. But it was on our descent that the sun decided to make an appearance, bathing the landscape in golden light.

It was like the mountain rewarding our patience!

The Brutal Descent and Takeaways

The journey back down felt never-ending. Steep slopes, slippery rocks, you name it, we encountered it all.

This trail tested my physical limits, but the stunning views and the awesome hiking buddies kept me going. I couldn't stop thinking about how we conquered one of the toughest mountains, a real confidence booster!

After what felt like an eternity (probably 4-5 hours), I made it down, feeling exhausted yet proud.

Mt. Kalatungan wasn't just an adventure; it pushed me to new limits and reminded me of the raw power of nature. It was humbling and empowering all at once.

Plus, the friends I made on this journey will be friends for life.

Mountain Calling!

If you're a thrill-seeker, Mt. Kalatungan is your ultimate challenge. This mountain will push you to your breaking point with sweat and maybe some tears, but the reward is worth every step.

Standing atop that summit, you'll feel like a conqueror, and the views will blow your mind. So, if you're up for it, get ready for an adventure that'll change your perspective on hiking!
